Set in dual timeline of 1660s and early twenty-first century London, this novel tells the story of two women: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi just before the plague hits the city and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. When Helen is summoned by a former student to view newly-discovered seventeenth-century documents, she enlists the help of Aaron Levy, an American graduate student to determine the identity of the mysterious scribe known as Aleph.

Author: Rachel Kadish- An American fiction and nonfiction writer who has received several awards including the National Jewish Book Award in 2017. She is also involved in New Voices, a project using the arts to work for tolerance.
